GETTING STARTED AT THE SITE

Sue Kelsey understood the distance between a conservation strategy developed at the corporate headquarters and implementation at a specific facility. She saw the missteps and false starts at the beginning of General Motors’ engagement with biodiversity and was responsible for building a bridge between lofty corporate plans and practical local implementation. She did this through the development of an onboarding process for sites and by providing tool kits that contained elements common to most locations as well as specific information that acknowledged the unique cultural, ecological, and industrial aspects of each place.

There are many approaches for the onboarding process, but the ones that work best start with a team and a leader and include processes for action that may include budget codes for timesheet reporting, purchase orders for materials, and details on deliverables and reporting requirements. Good processes start where the site is and then build from there, recognizing the value of existing work and rolling it into the conservation program.

Effective processes differ across companies, but they will all follow an approach similar to the one outlined below:

Create a structure: Appoint a strong leader.

Convene a team.

Create consistent support materials.
